MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -- WGEM Sports has learned that Don Patterson has resigned as head football coach at Western Illinois University.

Patterson has cited health reasons behind his decision. Just over a year ago the WIU coach was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and missed a majority of the 2008 season while recovering.

Patterson began the 2009 season at the helm of the program and just two wins away from becoming Western Illinois's all-time winningest coach. Offensive Coordinator Mark Hendrickson will assume the interim duties. Hendrickson coached seven games in 2008 in Patterson's absence.

Patterson led the Leathernecks to three playoff appearances and a No. 1 national ranking in his time as head coach.
