SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Phil Hare has presented a congressional committee with 7,000 signatures seeking higher Mississippi River levees.
Hare, D-Ill., presented the signatures of his constituents to Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
The petition asks Congress to increase the height of levees along the upper Mississippi River to levels that would hold back a 500-year flood.
Illinois has been hit by landmark floods several times in the past two decades.
Oberstar says he will work with Hare on the proposal while Congress develops a new Water Resources Development Act.
