AMC Entertainment reports 2Q loss

Associated Press - November 12, 2009 2:54 PM ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - AMC Entertainment Inc., the nation's second-largest theater chain by screens, says it lost money in the second quarter as fewer people bought tickets.

The Kansas City-based company on Thursday reported losing $8 million during the July-September period, compared with a profit of $3.8 million during the same period a year ago.

Revenue during the quarter declined 5 percent to $551 million.

AMC is privately held but reports its financial results because part of its debt is still publicly traded.

The company said attendance fell 7.3 percent during the quarter, which it blamed on a summer movie slate that lacked a monster hit like 2008's "The Dark Knight."

Concession sales were down 7.8 percent.

AMC operates 304 theaters with 4,574 screens.
