Chicago officials want immigrant students to stay

Associated Press - November 14, 2009 7:04 PM ET

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago City Council committee wants federal officials to halt deportation proceedings against immigrant students.

The Human Relations Committed on Friday approved a resolution urging the Department of Homeland Security to allow immigrant students to stay in the U.S. if they would be eligible for legal status under immigration reform legislation pending before Congress.

1 of those students is 21-year-old Rigo Padilla (puh-DEE'-yuh). He's a straight-A student at the University of Illinois at Chicago who came to the city 15 years ago from Mexico with his mother and sister.

He was reported to immigration officials after being stopped for rolling through a stop sign and charged with driving under the influence.
