WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Like Thanksgiving 1983, the upcoming holiday arrives with lean times and high unemployment.
And just like 1983, a Thanksgiving dinner was served courtesy of the United Auto Workers Local 838 retirees and Veridian Credit Union.
In 1982, Mike Adams was president of the UAW retirees and on the board of Veridian when he and his wife, Leona, began the dinners. Years after their deaths, what is now called the Mike and Leona Adams Thanksgiving Dinner continues.
Hundreds lined up Monday to eat and socialize with UAW employees, retirees and anyone who wanted to have a free meal.
La Porte City resident Carla Kennedy says after sitting at home alone, mingling with others was just as important as the turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, cranberries, corn, a roll and pumpkin pie.
