Steam line explodes near Cargill plant

Associated Press - December 3, 2009 2:04 PM ET

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - No injuries have been reported from the explosion of a steam line located in an underground vault near a Cargill plant.

A spokesman for Alliant Energy says the 10-pound line burst late Wednesday in the underground, concrete-reinforced vault on the southwest side of the Cedar Rapids plant.

Cargill spokesman Mark Klein says several vehicles were damaged and a construction trailer dislocated by the explosion. No buildings were damaged by the blast.

Klein says about 30 contractors and 15 Cargill employees were on the site when the explosion occurred. The contractors are installing a new boiler system near the explosion site, which will eventually replace Alliant's steam service. Klein said that work will not be delayed.

Alliant spokesman Drzycimski says the utility has launched an investigation into the blast and is assessing the damage.
