Troopers support budget proposal

Associated Press - December 23, 2009 4:24 PM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa state troopers are backing a plan to shift highway construction funds to the state patrol's budget.

President of the Iowa State Troopers Association, Darin Snedden, said Wednesday the patrol would face dangerous cutbacks without the plan proposed by Gov. Chet Culver.

It was part of a package Culver offered to reduce state spending by $1.6 billion over five years.

The plan has sparked opposition from many Republicans, contractors and local governments who argue against using road use funds for anything but highway work.

House Minority Leader and Hiawatha Republican Kraig Paulsen says the Legislature increased registration fees to get more money into the road use tax fund and that Republicans are resistant to shifting the money to the state patrol.
