On Dec. 26, 2004, a massive undersea earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 14 Asian and African countries.
The quake:
- unleashed energy equivalent to 550 million Hiroshima atomic explosions;
- left more than 1.7 million homeless;
- caused damage estimated at $10 billion;
- drew more than $13 billion in international aid. More than 700 groups aided reconstruction in Indonesia's Aceh province, the hardest-hit.
