Sun Sentinel publisher O'Donnell dies

Thomas P. O'Donnell, a former newspaper executive who oversaw the growth of the South Florida Sun Sentinel over the span of 2 decades, has died. He was 77.

O'Donnell's daughter, Kathleen, said her father died at his Hinsdale, Ill., home on Sunday. He suffered from Parkinson's Disease.

O'Donnell began his Tribune Company career in 1955 in the classified advertising department. He was named publisher of the Sun Sentinel in 1983, said the newspaper's current publisher, Howard Greenberg. O'Donnell was later named chairman of the Sun Sentinel and the Orlando Sentinel. Greenberg called O'Donnell a strong, visionary leader who turned the Sun Sentinel into a "regional powerhouse."

O'Donnell is survived his wife, brother, sister and children.
