MOBERLY, Mo. (AP) - An Illinois man charged in an accident that killed an Amish buggy driver in central Missouri faces a court hearing next month.
Thirty-4-year-old Jeffrey D. Fleming of Staunton, Ill., is charged in Randolph County with second-degree involuntary manslaughter.
Eli Borntrager of Madison was killed Jan. 12 when his two-wheel, horse-drawn buggy was struck on U.S. 63 near Moberly.
A preliminary hearing for Fleming is scheduled Aug. 30. Court records do not list an attorney for him, and a message left Wednesday at a phone listed under his name was not immediately returned.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that telephone records show Fleming sent a text message to his wife two minutes before the crash was reported. Fleming told investigators he was text-messaging while driving on nearby U.S. 24 but not while on U.S. 63.
