(WGEM) -- Former Quincy High two-time state champion golfer and Illinois junior Luke Guthrie finished as the runner-up at the 61st annual Illinois Open at Hawthorn Woods Country Club on Wednesday.
Guthrie shot a 1-over 70 to settle for second, one stroke behind Wilmette's Eric Meierdierks who fired a 1-under 68 to win the title.
Guthrie was 3-under for his final round before going 4-over on holes nine through eleven. He birdied the 18th hole for a three round total of 202 (-5).
However, he will have bragging rights when he returns to Champaign. Guthrie beat his head coach Mike Small, who shot a 1-under 68 on Wednesday and wound up tied for third.
Former Western Illinois golfer Tim Streng finished in a four-way tie for 12th after shooting a three round total of 209 (+2).
