DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - Corn planting has finally gotten under way in Iowa, according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture figures. As of May 12th, an estimated 15% of Iowa's 2013 corn crop was planted, compared to 86% planted at this time last year and to the 5-year average of 79%. But farmers caution a late start doesn't necessarily mean a bad harvest.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Des Moines firefighter injured when he and others fell through a floor while fighting an apartment building fire has been released from the hospital. The Des Moines Register reports that the firefighter was treated for a minor back injury he incurred while fighting the Thursday night fire. The only other injury reported was that of a resident of the building who suffered smoke inhalation.

CENTRAL CITY, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have identified the person killed and child injured in a two-vehicle crash as a Coggon mother and her young daughter. The Linn County Sheriff's Department says 26-year-old Rachel Denny died at the scene of the early Saturday crash. Her 2-year-old daughter, Izebella, is in an Iowa City hospital in critical condition.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - Officials say a Dubuque-based call center plans to begin operations in Mason City and hopes to create 135 jobs over the next five years. The Globe Gazette reports WS Live LLC will begin operation in Mason City if the City Council approves economic incentives at a Tuesday meeting.
