Former Sen. Talent launches new free-market group

Associated Press - October 18, 2009 4:14 PM ET

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent is launching a new foundation to promote free-market principles.

The Republican from Missouri will serve as chairman of the American Freedom and Enterprise Foundation. Talent cites the nation's rising long-term debt as one example of how he believes Washington politicians are straying from what used to be consensus positions.

He says the new think-tank group hopes to hold several issue-based forums around Missouri and plans to use Internet social networking sites to spread its message.

Talent served four years in the Senate before being defeated in 2006 by Democrat Claire McCaskill. He previously served eight years each in the U.S. House and the Missouri House of Representatives.
