CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) - Recent cold temperatures have frozen over Clear Lake and Crystal in northern Iowa, but state officials say walking on the ice remains risky.
Scott Grummer of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says ice thickness varies from 1 to 5 inches. He recommends drilling into ice to measure its thickness before venturing out for ice fishing.
He says it would have been better if 8 or 10 inches of ice had frozen before recent snows, which act as insulation and keep ice from getting as thick as it otherwise would.
