SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois State Board of Education says it is encouraging families to practice math skills with their children during winter break.
The board suggests that students sharpen their math skills with games or with everyday activities like shopping and cooking. The board says those types of efforts can help maintain the gains that students have made this school year.
State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch says "parents can be great models by talking through activities and sharing when and how they use math."
The board recommends parents use the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics as a resource. The group's Web site is http://www.ictm.org.
