FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) - Supervisors in Lee County in southeastern Iowa say they've created a committee to examine whether the county should eliminate its recorder's office.
The move comes as Lee County recorder Larry Holtkamp prepares to retire. County supervisor Larry Kruse says closing the office could save the county the recorder's $50,000 salary and decrease positions.
The county's board of supervisors says if the recorder's office is closed, its duties could be divided between the county auditor and county treasurer. The recorder's office is in charge of official documents, including marriage licenses, birth and death registrations and passports.
A vote by residents would be necessary to eliminate the office.
