CANTON, MO. (WGEM) -- Dick D. Valentine has been named as the 25th president of Culver-Stockton College, according to a news release from the college.

Valentine will succeed William L. Fox, who will leave in mid-June to become president at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York.

Valentine is a 1970 graduate of Culver-Stockton and has been vice president for alumni and development at Transylvania University at Lexington, Kentucky, since 2004. He is the first C-SC alumnus to be named president of the college and has served the college both as a member of the Culver-Stockton Board of Trustees and as former dean of admissions at C-SC.

Valentine will officially become president on July 1.

"As president of Culver-Stockton College, I will work to enhance the living and learning community of our campus and to provide the leadership to focus on a shared vision for the future," Valentine said in the news release. "This future will build on our traditions and mission but will also engage the Culver-Stockton community in creative conversation about building a stronger college, known for its ability to prepare students for lives of meaning, service and leadership."

Valentine previously served as vice president of external relations at Monmouth College and as dean of admission and financial aid at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas.

Valentine was elected after the presidential selection committee narrowed the field of 62 applicants to 16 semi-finalists and three finalists that visited the C-SC campus.

"We are especially pleased that Dick has accepted the leadership of the college," Gnuse said in the news release, "Of our many gifted presidential candidates, Dick best meets the qualifications and priorities that we are looking for in a college president, and will continue our progress toward our college's master plan. He knows and loves Culver-Stockton and has excellent experience in areas that will help us continue the progress at C-SC and take the college in the right direction."

Valentine also taught at Mendon Elementary School and served as district executive for the Boy Scouts of America in Quincy.
