Interval training can decrease exercise time

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- No time to exercise? No problem. Experts now say that with intense exercise, an entire week's workout can be squeezed into a single hour.

A new study found that interval training is twice as effective as regular exercise meaning more calories burned and increased weight loss.

Interval training is intense periods of exercise mixed in with slower exercise so that your body is constantly being challenged at different rates.

"The moment you make your body start guessing and wondering what it's gonna do next it requires a lot more from your body so it has to take from every area that it can to get energy and so therefore you burn a lot more," said  Dawn Fleer, a personal trainer with the Quincy YMCA.

Interval training was developed for Olympic athletes, but more and more studies are beginning to show that nearly everyone could benefit from the intense exercise technique.
