JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Organizers of the Tour of Missouri bike race have launched a campaign to solicit private donations for this year's event.
The announcement came Friday as an aide to Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said the lieutenant governor would be reducing his involvement with the professional competition, which he helped start in 2007.
Tour of Missouri organizers are seeking donations and asking people to register support for the 2010 race on a Web site.
The race received some state funding through last year. A proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year includes $1 million for the 2010 event, tentatively scheduled to begin Aug. 31.
Several of Kinder's aides have been involved in organizing the race. A spokesman says Kinder would still be involved with overseeing the Tour but his staff no longer needs to be directly involved.
