WGEM's Fourth of July Celebration at the Illinois Veterans Home

What are the parking options?

Parking on the grounds of the Illinois Veterans Home is limited to handicap (enter thru 12th Street entrance) and for personnel who have special parking permits.

A public parking area has been designated in the northwest area of the Illinois Veterans Home.  This will be a short walk from the main public viewing area.  You can access this parking area from 5th Street.

A number of streets around the Illinois Veterans Home will be designated as "No Parking" areas by the Quincy Police Department.  In particular, Locust Street between 8th-12th Street there will be no parking allowed.  Please be careful and do not park in areas that are marked accordingly.

Will there be food available on ground?

Food and drink stands will be available on grounds.  No glass containers will be allowed on grounds.

Will there be restroom facilities?

Portable restroom facilities will be located on the northwest and northeast corners of the public viewing area (see map).  There will also be facilities in the public parking area on the NW corner of the grounds.

Can I access the home thru the Memorial Cemetery entrance to the North?

You will only be able to get as far as the railroad tracks and there will be roadblocks keeping any vehicles from having access to the Home's grounds.

What time do the festivities start?

Festivities begin in the morning with a fishing tournament at Lake Illinois on the Veterans Grounds.  Evening events begin at 5 p.m.  See schedule below. 

The night sky will shine bright above the Illinois Veterans Home this Fourth of July as part of the year-long celebration of the home's 125th anniversary.

The 2011 Fourth of July fireworks celebration will return to the grounds of the Illinois Veterans Home. The focus of the program is being placed on maintaining and growing the patriotic community spirit that the Fourth of July brings.

The Quincy Park Band will return as part of the program, along with a number of military-themed displays.

No parking will be allowed on the South Side of Locust Street from 4 p.m. - 10:30pm. Locust Street from 8th to 12th will be closed to traffic from the start of the fireworks until pedestrian traffic has cleared after the fireworks. And sections of 5th Street, Parkview Drive and Gardner Park drive will be posted as no parking.

7:30 AM

  • Registration for Fishing Rodeo begins

8-10 AM

  • Fishing Rodeo at Lake Illinois (sponsored by Game Masters)

5:00 PM

  • All Wars Museum open and outside displays
  • Classic Car Show
  • Kid Zone
  • Food Vendors Open (County Market and Refreshment Services Pepsi)

7:30 PM

  • Quincy Community Park Band plays at stage area

8:45 PM

  • Skydivers

9:15 PM (est'd)   

  • Fireworks show sponsored by WGEM, County Market, Refreshment Services Pepsi, Blessing Health System, Cape Air and the Illinois Veterans Home.
