Ray Fuentes and the Hannibal Cavemen took out DuBois County 9-6 Monday despite a heat index in the triple digits.
HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -- As frustrated as he is, Hannibal Cavemen manager Jay Hemond says the risk far outweighs the reward when it comes to this week's youth baseball camp because of the extreme heat.
The Cavemen were forced to cancel Thursday's camp to ensure the safety of all the participants.
The team is also dealing with the heat when it comes to their players.
Hannibal has four home games this week, and Hemond had an optional batting practice Monday. Coupled with the team's late arrival following Sunday night's road game, Hemond didn't expect alot of players to put in the extra work.
He says they're taking all the precautions necessary to avoid harm.
"We try to make sure we rotate players this time of year, give guys days off, and just kind of monitor when we take batting practice and we don't," Hemond explained.
"We'll skip it every now and then just to keep guys fresh. It is something we have to constantly monitor and that's why we have trainers in the dugout at all times to make sure they can kind of look for any of the warning signs as well."
Hannibal hosts DuBois County Tuesday for the second consecutive night followed by visits from the Gems on Friday and DeKalb County on Sunday.
