HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -- The Huck Finn Shopping Center in Hannibal will soon have some new life brought into several vacant storefronts. Three new shops will be opening in the shopping center within the next few months.
Two clothing stores, Glik's and Factory Connection, will be opening in the Huck Finn Shopping Center along with Dunham's Sporting Goods.
Local businesses and shoppers say they're looking forward to the new stores.
"I think that's exactly what Marion County needs," said Hannibal resident Rachel Bode.
Bode says she tries to shop as locally as she can, but sometimes Hannibal just doesn't have what shoppers are looking for.
"I think it needs the clothing, such as for younger kids, high school, college-age level," said Bode.
With Factory Connection and Glik's both being clothing stores, Bode's wish will soon be coming true.
"I think that would be awesome to get some more businesses here and hopefully more local people would start shopping here,"said Bode.
Stores already in the Huck Finn Shopping Center say the center is a good place for business.
Not too long ago Sears Hometown Store moved from its location on Route 168 and opened up in the Huck Finn Shopping Center.
"So far its been great for us," said General Manager Clint Harris.
Harris says he's looking forward to new stores filling the nearby vacant spaces.
"The more stores we get in here, the more people we get walking in and out," said Harris.
And it's not just more shoppers that could be brought in.
More stores will also mean more jobs, and city officials say that's just one reason they expect the three new stores to help boost the local economy.
"It is a big deal because of the spin-off concept," said Jeff LaGarce, Hannibal City Manager. "The residual benefit. If somebody goes and buys a product, particularly if they come from out of town, they'll be more likely to sit down and have dinner while they're here, maybe do some more shopping."
The company that owns the Huck Finn Shopping Center says Glik's and Factory Connection will open within the next month and a half.
Dunham's should be ready in time for the holidays.
