QUINCY, IL (WGEM) -- Area students now have the power of words in their own hands.
Every third grade student in Adams County is getting a free dictionary and thesaurus.
The Noon Kiwanis Club delivered the reference books to third graders at St. James School in Quincy Wednesday morning.
Members say a home dictionary is something that adults take for granted everyday, but it can work wonders for a student's vocabulary.
They say it makes a lasting impression on the kids, because it's something that's theirs to keep.
"That's one of the big things that we get from the kids quite often is that they're excited about it--it's a book that's theirs to keep. It's not the school's book that they have to turn back in at the end of the year. They get to take it home. They take a lot of pride in that," said Craig Heming with the Noon Kiwanis Club.
The Noon Kiwanis started the program almost 15 years ago and has grown to the county school districts.
In addition, the idea has carried to the Palmyra club and has reach into Hannibal and Macon.
