(WGEM) -- After flying 300 World War II veterans to see their memorials in Washington, D.C., and with more still waiting, the Great River Honor Flight Sunday announced that it will begin accepting applications from Korean War veterans for future Honor Flight trips.
"We've been able to accomplish the opportunity to honor these great veterans only thru the generosity of so many individuals, groups, and businesses throughout out Northeast Missouri, West Central Illinois and Southeast Iowa", Carlos Fernandez, Chairman of the Great River Honor Flight Board, said. "It is our goal to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices."
The Great River Honor Flight program is already planning for its 11th and 12th flights, scheduled for Tuesday, April 24 and Tuesday, May 22, respectively. The Great River Honor Flight began with its first trip in October 2009.
Great River Honor Flight Vice-Chair Neal Maune said that while the group still has World War II veterans on the waiting list, the group felt it was ready to begin accepting veterans from the Korean War.
"While we continue to solicit and receive applications from WWII veterans, we wanted to begin the process of extending the Honor Flight experience to those who served in Korea as well", Neil Maune, Vice-Chair of the GRHF Board, said.
