Proposal to lower the cost of Illinois gas

Posted:

WEST QUINCY, Mo. (WGEM) -- Do you go out of your way to fill your tank with cheaper gas?

Many Quincy residents fill up in West Quincy where gas is usually ten to 15 cents cheaper, but a new proposal in the Illinois legislature might change that.

The plan is to lower the Illinois gas tax in areas within 30 miles of a bridge to another state, so the price is more competitive.

Drivers we spoke to say they'd definitely fill up in Illinois if the price was closer to what you pay just over the river.

"Sure of course I would, definitely. This is time and mileage out of my way when I have other things to do," said Sonya Barter.

The idea behind lowering the sales tax is to encourage more spending in Illinois, not only on gas but on other items sold at convenience stores.
