Eating healthy on a tight budget may be easier than you think

PITTSFIELD, Ill. (WGEM)--Eating healthy on a tight budget may be easier than you think, all it takes is a little planning ahead of time.

According to the Pike County Farm Bureau, prices of unhealthy foods have risen recently, but prices for fresh fruits and vegetables have remained constant.

The Farm Bureau says the third week of February is when most Americans have earned enough money to pay for their groceries for the entire year, around $2,400.

This year, officials are showing customers that eating healthy doesn't have to cost a lot.

"It just seems like a lot of people don't eat healthy these days and we're just trying to get the word out there that your basic healthy foods are cheaper," said Jeremy Thomas, Pike County Farm Bureau Board of Directors Member.

According to the Pike County Farm Bureau, food prices for unprepared fruits and vegetables has remained steady while prices of processed snack foods has risen in recent years.

At places like County Market, managers know that first hand.

"Eating healthy is very economical for the customers. Usually the healthier foods are the ones that are whole foods and fresh produce and things like that," said James Brown, Store Director of County Market.

And while unprepared food may take longer to cook, it makes a difference in how much you spend.

Linda Vetter says she's noticed food prices on the rise and that's one reason why she usually sticks to fresh produce.

"We try to eat very healthy. We always try to have fruits and vegetables at all times," Vetter said.  "Snacks are usually pretty high and I think the vegetables you get fuller."

And if you need more motivation, farm bureau officials say most produce comes from area farmers, and when you buy from them, the local economy itself gets just a little bit healthier.

The Farm Bureau also has a number of tips for how to eat healthy while spending less at the grocery store. For more information, click here.
