QHS ready to celebrate 20 years of "Showcase of Excellence"

QUINCY, IL (WGEM) -- It's that time of year, and excitement builds once again as The Quincy High School Show Choir and Jazz Band prepare for the arrival of dozens of show choirs and jazz bands from across the tri-states. These musicians will participate in the 20th Annual Showcase of Excellence.

This musical tradition will light up the center stage of Quincy High School until Midnight.

A single admission ticket may be purchased at the QHS auditorium entrance or the gymnasium entrance the day of the event and is priced at $10 for adults and $8 for students. Tickets are good for all performances. Using a one day pass, visitors can come and go as they please throughout the day, choosing the astounding sounds of the jazz bands in the QHS gym, or the razzle dazzle of show choirs in the QHS Theatre. The judges will offer targeted instruction on their performances as well as an overall competition score. Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the day's events with the Grand Champion Trophy presented at the high-spirited finale in the QHS Theatre.

"They're performers and they want to show off a little bit so whenever they have people in the seats, they always perform and they always play better. And they always feel better about themselves because they feel valued," Kathi Dooley, Quincy Band Director, said

Other activities of the day will include the popular show choir fashion show and the karaoke-style solo competition, where stars of tomorrow are showcased, and fun is had by all. There will be jam sessions, improvisation clinics and other workshops offered throughout the day. Audience members will be able to cast their vote for the Peoples Choice Award Winners in both jazz and show choir categories. Food and beverages will be available in the QHS cafeteria.

Once again, this event is made possible through the hard work of many volunteers, and the Friends of the Performing Arts. Proceeds help support music programs at all grade levels throughout the Quincy Public School system.

"We appreciate and are grateful for the support we continue to receive in promoting this event," said Kathi Dooley, director of music for the Quincy Public Schools. "We are honored that Showcase of Excellence has become a major event for so many school music programs. Smaller schools had no place to go to get the kind of experience they receive through Showcase. The judges, clinicians and choreographers are renowned music professors and experts in their fields from throughout the country. During the day they present workshops and clinics for the groups. That kind of exposure for the students is invaluable and leaves them with pride and confidence."

As hosts for the day, the QHS Show Choir and Jazz Band will perform in exhibition at the end of the event, after working behind the scenes to make the day a success.

Volunteer parents and friends will provide a variety of foods for sale in the cafeteria including baked potatoes and sandwiches, baked goods and a variety of beverages. More information is available by calling 217-224-3774
