Fort Madison furniture store catches fire

FORT MADISON, IA. (WGEM) - Crews were on the scene early Sunday morning as a fire broke out in the Tri-State Furniture store in Fort Madison.

Residents from all over Fort Madison stared in awe AT THE PLACE where the Tri State Furniture store once stood.

"Very very shocked. I was quite amazed when I got down here to see the damage to the building. It's quite extensive and really sad, because the building the business and the family has been here for such a long time," said Fort Madison resident Tammy Brown.

Brown said this fire didn't just burn down a store, but a part of the community.

"Sad. Very sad because I grew up just a block away and this has always been down here and it's just not going to be the same without it here,"Brown said.

Bob Orozco grew up in Fort Madison as well. He said the store's impact goes much further than just selling furniture.

"It's going to be a major impact on the business community in Fort Madison because they were contributors not just in a sense of not just being in business but they did a lot for the community," Orozco said.

The fire started in the back of the store, then spread. A two story apartment also burned down, but it was only used for storage.

Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren said this fire was the biggest he's seen this year.  In fact it was so powerful, firefighters weren't able to make it into the store.

"Tried to make entry into the front of the store and they got in about ten feet into the building when the fire pushed them back," Herren said.

Herren also said no one was injured when the fire broke out, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
