A Second Chance: 38 year old living out football dream at C-SC

CANTON, Mo. (WGEM) -

Andy Staten is not your average college athlete.

The 6-foot-5 inch, 290-lb. pile driving nose tackle is getting a second lease on his football life at Culver-Stockton College at the age of 38.

"What an unbelievable feeling to do this and have the opportunity at my age," said Staten.

"You ask any 38-year-old, 'Would you play the game again?' Most of everyone I know would say, 'Yeah.' But to this extreme? I don't know."

To understand Staten's story, consider where he's come from.

A back injury sidelined his playing days 20 years ago and a short time later he got married and had two children.

He later divorced and was having a difficult time making ends meet.

"I wasn't making enough money," Staten expressed. "It was a struggle for all of us. Out of bad things come good things, and I'm taking the good from the bad."

Wildcats head coach Jeff Duvendeck and Andy's brother Mark are good friends having spent time together on the Michigan State staff.

When Mark approached him about recruiting Andy, Duvendeck was luke warm about the idea and knew the transition would be far from easy.

"It was exciting for the opportunity but also scary a little bit," said Duvendeck.

"I had to convince administration and some other people that it wasn't a ploy to get an extra coach on the staff."

Staten lives on campus in a dorm.  His teammates call him 'Papa' and besides studying, he spends most of his down time in the training room because nearly his entire body aches, but he wouldn't have it any other way."

"If you can do it, do it," said Staten.

"What an opportunity. It's an amazing, you still get that euphoric feel on the field and there's still that high that you just don't want to come off of."
