It's been a long two years of waiting for doors to reopen at the Walter Hammond Day care center, in Quincy.
But that wait is over, because the day care center officially reopened this month.
That's welcome news for parents who were hit hard when the daycare closed two years ago.
It was really hard, like I stopped working because they closed down so, it was really hard for me," parent Bryanna Hill.
The closing of Walter Hammond Day Care was especially hard for mothers like Hill, because she felt like she had no where else to turn to take her son Geno.
Ongoing struggles to pay bills because of the down economy and state funding decreases are what ultimately forced Walter Hammond to close its doors in May 2010. But thanks to donations from the community and a fundraiser back in December, mothers like Hill can now breathe a sigh of relief.
"Our kids can come here after school while we're at work ya know," Hill said.
Lisa Sams, Walter Hammond's Executive Director, says when the day care closed down she saw first hand the impact it made.
"We saw so many children out there that we knew needed quality care that we decided this was a right fit, this was something that needed to be done," Sams said.
In addition to and educational program, the newly open daycare offers three meals a day, and transportation to and from public schools.
Hill says now that the daycare is back open, not only she will reap the benefits, but other members of the community will too.
"I think it's good, and I'm happy it's open now, so, really happy," Hill said.
The day care still has 15 spots left to fill. If your child is between the ages of 2-12 and you want to enroll them, stop by or give the day care center a phone call at 217-228-6343.
