Make some money while recycling freezers and refrigerators

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Got an old fridge or freezer laying around the house? You could earn some cash and help a charity of your choice by making one phone call.

It's part of Ameren's ActOnEnergy campaign. Ameren will arrange a pick up time and you will get $50. And you can even help an organization, like the Adams County American Red Cross, receive a $10 referral bonus.

"We're just trying to get the word out and if people will recycle, this is a good way. It's a win win, not only for the customer but also for the American Red Cross," said Pam Shaffer, the Executive Director of the Adams County American Red Cross.

When the Adams County American Red Cross, receives the bonuses they are able to use that money within their organization.

"We use it for our daily operation and our programs and services. So it will go to help our disaster clients, it will go for our blood program, for our health and safety program, or for serving our military men and women," said Shaffer.

There are some requirements though.

  • You must be an Ameren Illinois electric customer
  • The appliance must full size (10-27 cubic feet)
  • The appliance has to be in working (cooling) condition
  • Pickup must be from a residence, not a business

You schedule a pickup time you can call Ameren at 1-866-899-9088. You can call on weekdays from 6am-7pm and on Saturdays from 8am-7pm.

If you would like to help the Adams County American Red Cross you can give them this code, RR12-1004, to make sure the Red Cross receives its referral bonus.
