MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -

Western Illinois University celebrated 110 years Monday during its annual Founder's Day celebration.

To mark the occasion, faculty, staff and community members were invited to celebrate and learn about the history of the university.

WIU President Dr. Jack Thomas says the school has come a long way since classes started back in 1902, but he has even more in store for the future.

"We are in the design stage for the performing arts center, however we don't have the funding right now, we are ready to go to bid and we're supposed to start the construction for the performing arts center during the spring semester," Thomas said.

Thomas says they are also looking into building a new science facility as well as a welcome center on the north side of campus.
