Hannibal police collect unused prescriptions for drug take back

Many medicine cabinets are filled expired prescription drugs, and that is why Hannibal Police held a drug take back program Saturday in Hannibal.

Police officials say the goal is to prevent pill abuse and theft by taking the unused drugs out of people's homes.

Officials say there is a high rate of prescription drug abuse and most abused drugs are obtained by family and friends in medicine cabinets.

Police say disposing the drugs at a take back event is safer than flushing the drugs down the toilet or throwing them in the trash.
