QJHS Junior Honor Society students spend Saturday "in the doghouse"

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Students from QJHS National Junior Honor Society took part Saturday at the Quincy Animal Shelter, walking and bathing dogs, along with cleaning kennels.

Students also collected items such as food, blankets, collars, treats, toys, and cleaning supplies to deliver to the shelter.

Ninth grader Leah Fuqua fed cats and changed litter boxes, and says she thinks volunteering is important.

"They keep all these animals protected and safe until they find a good home, so I just feel like it is good to give back to them," said Fuqua.

You can donate items for the event, which can be dropped off at Quincy Junior High School at 14th & Maine.

"This is a great opportunity for the students to give back to their community," said QJHS counselor Jackie Martin. "My hope for this project is that students come away with the realization that volunteering can be a fun and rewarding experience."

Students are selected by a faculty council. To be eligible for the National Junior Honor Society, students must have a GPA of 3.8 and meet high standards of leadership, service, citizenship and character.
