QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

It was a special day for Quincy University's Friar Joe Zimmerman who is celebrating 50 years of priesthood.

Community members and friends gathered at the Holy Cross Friary to honor the priest with a reception.  Friar Joe taught sociology at QU for nearly three decades, and said now he plans on writing a book that combines his interests of sociology and religion.

"I'm trying to write a sociology textbook from the standpoint of the gospel, which I never got around to doing when I was teaching. Basically it was secular sociology. So I've taken each topic and trying to see how the gospel relates to this," he said.

Friar Joe is a native of Decatur, and completed a Ph.D. in sociology at Harvard University in 1973.
