HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -- When you ask the Hannibal football team about their success through two unbeaten months of football, the answer is never the same.

"Talent and team work," said senior defensive back Caleb Bieniek.

"We just work pretty well together as a team."

"I think something that gets over looked a lot is our coaching staff," added junior defensive back Lijah Harrison.

Or, maybe it's something else.

"A lot of people really doubted our offensive line, and they've really stepped it up this season," senior quarterback Dalton Powell expressed.

Dig deeper and it could be the something more.

"We've been behind at halftime four or five times and came back to win, so I think the resilient nature of these kids makes us a special football team," head coach Mark St. Clair expressed.

Whatever the formula, whatever the answer, it's one that has worked to perfection.

Coming in to the season there were some questions surrounding the Hannibal team but one area never in doubt was a secondary that has been the anchor of the Pirate defense.

That defense will have it's biggest test to date come this Saturday in Jefferson City, in a Week 9 battle with Helias.

"We're definitely going to have to step up our game in pass coverage," Harrison told WGEM Sports.

"We haven't seen a team that has passed as much as they like to."

There is plenty at stake coming into this weekend's match-up between the two Class 4 powerhouses.

"It's a big game. It dictates if we win districts," said Caleb Bieniek.

"If we beat Helias we'll be first in districts and we'll have three straight home games if we continue to win in the post season."

St. Clair added: "Our kids know what type of game this is, and it's a chance to do something that only a handful of teams in the history of Hannibal High have done.

"That's go through the regular season undefeated."

The Pirates have a chance to accomplish all of that Saturday night.

Kickoff in Jefferson City is scheduled for 7 p.m.
