Why is a Missouri Attorney General Candidate concerned about Illinois' pension problems? Because he doesn't want Missouri tax dollars used to bail out its neighbor.
Republican Ed Martin said he would fight to block any effort to help cash-strapped states like Illinois. Illinois' unfunded pension liability is estimated at $83 billion and state officials have left open the possibility of a federal bailout. Martin said it's unfair if Missourians have to pay for Illinois' mistakes.
"None of us want to see Illinois suffer or see their economy suffer, but they put themselves in a tough spot, and I don't think us bailing them out solves the problem," he said.
Martin also said if one state gets a bailout, he expects more states to ask and receive one as well.
