MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -- In Greek mythology, the weapon of choice for Zeus was a thunderbolt - one that he would hurl at those he wasn't exactly pleased with.

For Macomb's Brett Taylor, he starts his Twitter handle with the word Zeus and his way of stopping opponents is his physical presence.

The 6'3, 225 pound linebacker with incredible instincts patrols the middle of the Macomb defense as the all-time tackles leader in program history, and the numbers reflect his impact on the field.

"When he was a freshman we knew he was special," said Macomb head coach Kelly Sears.

"Brett is probably one of the best linebackers I've ever had, and through the years I've had a lot of great inside linebackers that have put up great numbers and he's right there at the top of the list."

"As a freshman I didn't know I was going to do all of this," Taylor told WGEM Sports.

"Coach Sears put me at defensive end in the summer, but then sophomore year there was a spot open."

Three years later Taylor leads one of the top defensive units in the state, making eye-popping tackles, like his week eight highlight stop for loss that surfaced on YouTube.

"Coach called a blitz, and guys were cutting me all game," said Taylor.

"I decided to jump, and guessed the snap count right."

Kelly Sears is used to seeing Taylor make those kind of plays.

"The thing about Brett is the way he has a nose for the ball and his motor never stops running, Sears expressed."

"When you look at film, and you watch players, he is always where the ball is, offense or defense he is always knocking somebody around."

Taylor and the Bombers will be in search of their second consecutive trip to the IHSA quarterfinals, when they travel to Peoria Notre Dame this Saturday for a class 4A second round playoff game.

Kickoff is schedule for 7 o'clock.
