The Quincy Salvation Army and Hannibal Salvation Army kick off the Christmas season with events Friday.
The Hannibal Salvation Army will kick off its Christmas Tree of Lights Campaign at Noon at their headquarters at 302 Broadway. Monday raised through the campaign helps provide Christmas food baskets and toys, along with year-round help for food, rent and utilities.
Officials say they helped thousands of people last holiday season but even more are coming in this year.
"Well we have a lot more people coming in for food assistance, that's almost doubled. And so this year we anticipate that there's going to be a whole lot more families coming to us at Christmas time in need," said Lt. Rich Forney with the Salvation Army.
This year their goal is to raise 75 thousand dollars. All the money will go toward providing Christmas food baskets and toys along with giving year-round assistance for food, rent and utilities to families in need.
Forney says one way you can help is to man a red kettle and ring a bell with family or friends. If you are interested you can go to www.ringbells.org
In Quincy, the Tree of Lights Kickoff Dinner begins at 6 p.m. at the Kroc Center.
