Firefighters respond to barn fire in Macomb

MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -

Three fire departments responded to a barn fire Saturday afternoon in McDonough County.

When firefighters responded to the barn on East Grant Street in Macomb it was fully engulfed in flames.

No one was inside at the time of the fire but there was a tractor and two farm combines inside of the barn. Firefighters with the Macomb Fire Department say they encountered several obstacles while fighting the fire, including several explosions.

"There's lots of flammable liquid fuel, oils, things like that, the large rubber tires on the farm equipment, things that make it more difficult to put the fire out, plus there isn't easy access to the entire structure with the amount of fire," says Lt. Tim Campbell, a firefighter with the Macomb Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
