INDUSTRY, Ill. (WGEM) -
A coal mine in Industry has been cited for polluting local waterways 624 times in the past seven years.
The Illinois Pollution Control Board says the mine polluted tributaries of Grindstone Creek, which eventually goes to the Illinois River.
The maximum penalty facing Springfield Coal Company, and its predecessor, Freeman United Coal Mining Company is $64 million.
However, the board has rarely imposed fines greater than $100,000.
