QHS eyes low post prowess in season opening tournament

Posted:

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- As Sean Taylor sees it, the annual QHS Thanksgiving Tournament is a must see for basketball fans every year.

But this season's event could be the best when it comes to balance in Taylor's decade as head coach.

Quincy High is joined by Algonquin Jacobs, Urbana, and Thursday night's opponent Carbondale in the four team field.

For the home team the known is the veteran presence on the perimeter. However, the unknown comes down low as Luka Radovic, Jason Salrin, Barnell Thomas, and QND transfer Connor Mellon try and pick up the slack left from the graduation of All-Conference forward DeAngelo Dean.

"I think our posts are going to be fine. I think they're going to surprise some other people (but) I don't think they're going to surprise us," Taylor said.

"All four of have different strengths but they're all equally good."

According to Mellon, "We have good guards like Martin (Kvitle), Mason (Fairley), and Cole (Abbey). As a big guy, DeAngelo Dean graduated last year, and we have some shoes to fill in his spot."

The Blue Devils are sure to get a test in all three games starting with Carbondale on Thanksgiving night.

The QHS senior class is in search of their third consecutive title and Fairley knows the Terriers are a legitimate foe to begin with.

"They're good. Flat put, they're good," Fairley indicated.

"They've got some good players, we're definitely going to have to execute and play well. We can't be sloppy with the ball or lose. Offensively and defensively, if we execute, we have a pretty good chance to win."

Taylor added: "Those guards are going to have to be in great shape and they're going to have to give us big time minutes Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I hope they're not worn out by Saturday night but that's why we push them in practice and work hard. We'll see if that's paid off."

Quincy High and Carbondale square off at 7:30 p.m.

As always your home for Blue Devil broadcasts is ESPN 1440 starting with the pregame show at 7 p.m.
