Tim Lafferty from Illini West received more than 4,200 votes to win The People's Choice Award for WGEM Coach of the Year.
(WGEM) -- The race for The People's Choice Award always seems to come down to a two person race.
And, this year's high school football Coach of the Year vote was no different.
Illini West's Tim Lafferty and Clark County's Quentin Hamner went back and forth during the online vote.
But in the end, one separated himself from the other.
After nearly 7,800 votes were cast Lafferty was crowned the winner on Monday evening.
He received more than 4,200 votes to edge Hamner, who did very well in his own right earning more than 3,200 votes.
Lafferty led the Chargers to an eight win season this fall including a trip to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.
WGEM Sports will feature The People's Choice in the coming days.
