Unity School District hires new superintendent

Posted:

The Unity school board hired the school district's next superintendent at its meeting Wednesday evening.

Brian Kurz comes to Mendon from El Paso, Illinois.

He'll replace long time superintendent Diane Robertson who plans to retire at the end of this school year.

Kurz will officially begin his duties as superintendent on July 1, 2013, but will spend some time over the next several months working with the Board, administration and staff to ensure a smooth transition.

Kurz accepted a three]year contract at a total package of $120,000 for the first year.

He's currently Director of Instruction at El Paso Gridley CUSD #11 where he has also served as a principal and a teacher.

Kurz began his teaching career in the Bloomington Public School District in 2002.

He has extensive knowledge of Common Core State Standards and curriculum alignment, and has been trained by the Danielson Group as a trainer on the state's new teacher evaluation system.

He also has assisted in the implementation of a 1:1 program at El Paso Gridley.

Kurz says, "I want to work in a district that is passionate about providing the best educational opportunities for students even in the midst of difficult financial times.  The positive reputation that Unit #4 has earned is very obvious through discussion with administrators around the state. The focus on 1:1 at the high school now and middle school in the future is very enticing to me, both as an educator, and as a parent."
