HANNIBAL (WGEM) -- If you're facing legal problems in Northeast Missouri, there may be a place you can go for help.
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, located in Hannibal's Federal Building, provides free legal advice and representation for low-income residents.
The office says they can help with most any civil matters--anything from landlord issues to social security benefits to domestic abuse. They say many of the people they help are simply overwhelmed, and believe they have no way to represent themselves.
"For example, in the credit card industry...there's what they call debt buyers these days, where people buy up credit card debts for pennies on the dollar," said Kevin Suffern, an attorney with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri.
"They go sue these people. Half the time the amounts are wrong, half the time they can't prove their case, but these people stick their head in the sand. They don't go to court--even if they do go to court, they don't know what's going on."
If you're in need of this free legal advice, or to make a donation to Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, you can call the Hannibal office at 1-800-767-2018. You can also click here to visit their website.
