QUINCY (WGEM) -- Residents of the Illinois Veterans Home received a bit of a surprise Friday morning--a special visitor from St. Louis.
Mike Shannon, former Cardinals player and longtime Cardinals radio broadcaster paid a visit to the veterans. Some waited for an hour, hearing he might be coming, and once word spread, a steady stream of vets came by to shake his hand and get a few autographs.
Shannon says visiting with veterans is something he loves to do.
"I always come out," he said. "These guys are the reason that we're able to go where we want to go are because of these guys and gals out here, so I like to come back and thank them."
Although most of the veterans were loyal Cardinals fans, there were one or two Cubs supporters in the crowd, and even one in a Chicago White Sox shirt.
Shannon has been broadcasting Cardinals games since 1972.
