Right now, 9-1-1 centers can track your location during a cell phone call, but they don't have the technology to locate a text.
The FCC is working with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon to set specific standards nation wide. This means local dispatch centers will need to upgrade their equipment.
In order to get the information they need in an emergency, dispatchers would have to be able to interact with the person sending the text.
"In other words, to send a text back. The key challenge is, is to get that text message with the location information delivered to us from where that emergency text is coming from," Steve Rowlands, Adams County 9-1-1 Director, said.
Rowlands says the Adams County 9-1-1 is several years out from being able to implement this system.
So for now, the best way to call for help remains to make a phone call.
