MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -- And then there were three.
After receiving around 60 applicants for the head coaching vacancy in its football program, Western Illinois has narrowed the list of replacements for Mark Hendrickson down to three finalists, the university announced Wednesday.
Minnesota-Duluth head coach Bob Nielson will be in Macomb on Monday to interview. Nielson has won 100 games in only 10 seasons, and he led the Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA Division II national championships in 2008 and 2010.
Nielson is also a former Division II National Coach of the Year.
The second of three finalists is recently fired Western Michigan head coach Bill Cubit.
He spent the last eight years as the leader of the Broncos winning 51 of 98 games and taking the program to three bowl games, including last year's Little Caesar's Bowl before being let go last month following a 4-8 campaign.
Cubit will interview in Macomb on Tuesday.
Lastly, the most inexperienced of the group is Missouri S&T head coach David Brown who's spent the last three seasons with the Miners compiling a record of 19-14.
His team's have improved every year going from three wins in 2010, to six in 2011, to 10 victories this season including a 64-6 clobbering of Quincy University at Flinn Stadium in October.
Brown, who has experience as a Division I assistant coach at Ohio, comes to Macomb on Thursday.
In a statement, WIU athletic director Tim Van Alstine said they are moving closer to the end of the process.
"Our goal is to have someone hired very soon so they can hit the ground running with putting together their coaching staff and to get on the road recruiting."
