Grocery stores packed with last minute shoppers

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Not only are the malls packed on Christmas Eve, but grocery stores across the tri-states are too.

Mark Lammers with Hy-Vee on Broadway in Quincy says this is one of the busiest days of the year for the store and says there were a few items Monday that were popular among last minute shoppers.

"It's a lot of snacky stuff, party trays, vegetable trays believe it or not Poinsettias are still doing very well today, a lot of people are wanting that Poinsettia to take to where ever they are heading this evening or perhaps tomorrow," said Lammers.

Lammers says the store has easily seen thousands of people walk through their door today, and while it is one of the busiest days of the year, it is also one of the most joyful, as families are in the "Christmas Spirit" Lammers said.

Both HyVee on Broadway and on Harrison will be open until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Other grocery stores in Quincy have varying hours:

  • Wal-Mart will be open until 8 p.m.
  • K-Mart will be open until 10 p.m.
  • County Market will be open until 6 p.m.
  • Walgreens will still honor their 24/7 policy today.
