Hannibal Restaurant Delivers Meals to Those In Need

HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

Each Christmas, dozens of volunteers fill Lula Belle's restaurant in Hannibal to make Christmas for area seniors a bit more merry.

Lula Belle's donates its time and its money, and its suppliers donate some of the food to prepare meals for about 700 area people who say they need it.

"Helps me make sure I got a meal...make sure I got something to eat," meal recipient Gary Lumberg said.

For the volunteers, it's just a way they can help out.

"When we first went into business, back in '91, we said we would do it and we did and we have and we do," Lula Belle's co-owner Michael Ginsberg said.

Ginsberg says this is the 22nd year he's been serving food from his kitchen to the dining rooms of those who need it most in the community.

"Good. It's Great. It's the best thing we do all year," said Ginsberg.

As volunteers shuffled out the door, the requests just kept coming in.

One volunteer said, "The big list has already went out. These are the ones that just came in this morning."

And as more volunteers showed up to deliver these heaping holiday helpings, volunteers said more of the Hannibal community was blessed with holiday cheer.

Four-time volunteer Samantha Cockrell said, "I have fun actually. Just seeing peoples' faces and how grateful they are. It's nice."

And she says many of them would not have a hot meal without it.
